Blood, sweat, tears and a shoestring budget defined the beginning of The Foundry, a site-specific, terroir-defined wine brand created by Chris Williams and James Reid in 2001.
The Foundry work closely with grape growers across the Cape to source fruit optimum ripeness from sites that are best suited to every wine variety. This approach allows for the intrinsic character of each wine to come to the fore in every bottle. Using a combination of traditional and modern winemaking techniques – but never following a recipe – The Foundry’s aim is always just to produce wine that’s good to drink.
“During the course of the year (2019), it was announced that Chris Williams is leaving Meerlust to focus on his own label and why not if it’s as good as this?” (WineMag Top 25 wines of 2019)
