Lukas van Loggerenberg has always been a big fan of wine from the Loire Valley in France. The freshness and vibrancy of the whites, together with their ageing ability, really appeal to him, while the focus and precision of the reds is what he respects most.
Even though Lukas grew up around wine – in the Breedekloof Valley– and studied viticulture and oenology at Elsenburg, the defining moment in his wine journey happened on a trip to France, where at Domaine de La Chevalerie the winemaker Stephanie opened a 1989 Cab Franc that took his breath away. Right there Lukas decided to start his own wine label.
Van Loggerenberg wines are produced using fruits from some of the best vineyards in the Cape, farmed by talented and passionate farmers. Great wine, for this label, is about knowing when to pick the grapes. And because they don’t add any enzymes or fining agents the margin for error is very small. The result? Great wines, made with passion.
Lukas van Loggerenberg was named as winemaker in Wine Cellar’s 2017 Young Guns and his wines described by Wine Mag editor Christian Eedes as “pretty damn hot”.
