Conceived in 2004 by a group of likeminded wine makers and fruit growers on the premise that great fruit requires extremes of climate and not moderation.
The first vineyards were planted on the steep slopes of the Winterhoek mountains. Planted amongst stone fruit orchards and Cape Fynbos these vines are the only ones within many miles. The great vineyards of Burgundy are planted in rocky soils, in areas that experience icy cold winters and hot sunny summers. So to begin with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were our focus. Not only did they experience frost and very low ground temperatures in winter but had daily summer sun and fresh breezes.
2009 saw the first release of these wines with a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These range is now complete with the addition of Malbec and Syrah.
2012 saw our Pinot served at the Queens Jubilee luncheon and for the last 3 years our MCC Beulah has been enjoyed at the Epsom Derby.
2016 some of our vineyards were devastated by fires roaring through the mountains and replanting has already begun.
Snow Mountain will continue to produce small volumes of wines from our acclaimed vineyards searching for the holy grail of climate and soil.
