Proclaimed “Top Wine Area” at the exclusive 2010 and 2016 South African Terroir Awards, Wellington wines is a compact Wine Route with a dense concentration of historic wine farms and estates. Covering extraordinary diverse terrain, it stretches from the Berg River to the Swartland wheat fields and into the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains. The 17-member wine route includes one major producer-cellar, family-owned wine estates, a sprinkling of boutique wineries and four potstill brandy and spirits producers.
One of the youngest wine districts, Wellington is literally the “cradle of the contemporary South African wine industry”, supplying up to 85% of the country’s vine cuttings, colloquially known as “stokkies”. Once better known for its vital role in propagating and supplying this grafted, phylloxera-resistant rootstock due to excellent soils and climate, Wellington has emerged as an acclaimed, trendsetting player on the South African wine scene.
