Winter wines – our winemakers select their favourite winter wines and tell us why

Winter is here and we’re sure you are probably keen to stock up the best winter wines for the chilly season. Check out our hand-picked winter wine selection, courtesy of our winemakers, that are guaranteed to fight off the cold.

Joostenberg (Tyrrel Myburgh)

“My favourite winter wine would have to be our Klippe Kou Syrah – the name was inspired by the vines that are planted in our rockiest soils and the roots struggle to get through the rocks. It is fuller than most of my other reds and has a spiciness to it which handles the richer dishes quite well such as oxtail or aubergine.”

Myburgh Bros. (Tyrrel Myburgh)

In Myburgh Bros. I would suggest our Myburgh Bros. Viognier 2017 as it has a peachy, apricot character. It tends to have an oily, rich texture that pairs well with fish, poultry, a hearty soup, or spicy Thai food.

Also, our Roussanne that is made with mediterranean grapes has less acidity, is of a matty quality that goes well with a good dessert.

The flavour profile comes from the grape mainly – depending on the site, it can have more or less acidity. If it has high acidity it will have more zip whereas if the acidity is lower there is more richness – therefore the site has a big impact.

Trizanne Signature Wines (Trizanne Barnard)

Reserve Syrah 2017 from Elim – a region where purity of fruit, lots of expression of spice and silky tannins are to be expected. With this Syrah specifically, the wine-drinker will experience wild strawberries, cranberries, hints of pomegranate and crushed rose petals all neatly integrated with the oak.”

Cape Rock (Gavin Band)

“All of our reds can be recommended. It depends whether it will be paired with food or drunk on its own. For steak the Red 2015 or the Cabernet 2017 would be a good choice. On the other hand Amnesty 2017 is a less serious lighter style of wine which can be enjoyed with food like cheese and charcuterie or on its own.”

Raised by Wolves (Adam Mason)

“Right now, I’d say it would be hard to beat the 2015 Limestone Pinot Noir hailing from vineyards on the lower Duiwenhoks river close to Vermaaklikheid on the Cape South Coast. I would pair either duck or springbok for their earthy texture to match this wine. Serve with a reduction of cranberries or something similar to provide tartness or contrast to the base notes, and root vegetables such as parsnips – and perhaps a little truffle mash potato? Or if you want some greenery use a gremolata to garnish the meat instead.”

Hughes Family Wines (Billy Hughes)

“Our Red blend (any year) is always great because of the spicy undertones presented by the Shiraz and other Rhone style cultivars. It goes well with all warm dishes like Game and red meat dishes, spicy curries, and any of the bold flavours present in warm dishes.”

Radford Dale (Alex Dale)

The Winery of Good Hope Syrah is the most wintery wine out of the selection on the site – pairs really well with a beef stroganoff, or beef casserole, roast pork shoulder and roasted root vegetables for the veggies!”

Van Loggerenberg and Carinus Family Wines (Lukas Van Loggerenberg)

All of my reds work well in winter. My Geronimo Cinsault is an “every time of the season” wine; while the Breton Cabernet Franc is probably my personal favourite – it’s very Loire driven and perfect for winter as this works just beautifully with lamb; and the Carinus Syrah is also a lovely winter wine.
